Chimfunshi Wildlife Sanctuary
Located about 75 km from Chingola, and run by the Siddle family, Chimfunshi is the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world. They presently have over 80 chimps in their care which were all taken by poachers, abandoned pets, old circus animals or were badly abused or mistreated. Their commendable efforts and success in establishing family breeding groups in an almost wild setting has raised much international publicity. Nevertheless, this is part of the Siddle's private farm (the babies and injured animals are still nursed at their home) so respect for their establishment is to be expected (i.e. please call in advance). In addition to chimps, there is an orphaned 'pet' hippo and numerous birds and other wildlife around. Camping facilities are available beside a beautiful river (canoes for hire) and guided trips around the complex can be arranged. If you don't have your own transport, pickups from Chingola can be pre-arranged to coincide with the farm's weekly shopping.
